What is Invisalign?
At ViVo Dental Westbrook we are pleased to be able to offer Invisalign as a treatment alternative to traditional metal braces, in some cases. It works best for older teens and adults looking to change the appearance or function of their teeth. Invisalign is a clear retainer system that is practically invisible so that no one can tell you are wearing them and is a much more esthetic alternative to metal braces.
Orthodontic Conditions Treated with Invisalign
Invisalign can be used to treat many different types of tooth related issues that patients present with. All sorts of problems can be treated such as crowding, spacing, rotation, malocclusion (bad bite), overbite, underbite, etc. One of the other big advantages to Invisalign apart from the esthetic advantage already explained is that the Invisalign retainers are removable, so you can remove them to eat as well as brush or floss your teeth. This way its much better to maintain proper hygiene compared to traditional braces so your mouth can stay healthier throughout your treatment.
How Does Invisalign Treatment Work?
Invisalign works by taking some very accurate impressions of your teeth and then digitally designing and working up your case to decide where we want your teeth to be when we are finished. Then a series of clear retainers are made and some small white “buttons” are bonded to your teeth. The “buttons” are the same composite material used for white fillings so they blend into the color of your tooth and are not visible. The retainers then are placed over your teeth and the retainers slowly move your teeth into their final position.
Each retainer is worn for approximately two weeks and then a new retainer is started and this continues during the course of your treatment. Your dentist will then generally see you every 6 weeks to make sure things are progressing along nicely. If we need to make any adjustments to your treatment, regular visits will allow us to do so while still keeping you on track.
How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?
Generally Invisalign treatment can range from 4-24 months depending on the patient and how much tooth movement is needed but on average most cases are around 10-12 months. Wearing your trays at least 22 hours per day, consistently, will help progress your treatment. After treatment, you will need to wear a retainer to maintain your new smile.
